Thumbnail Biography

Emma, Maggie and GeejMaggie grew up in Seattle in an academic family and a working-class African-American neighborhood where she attended public school.  She drew on her early life in her first career as a professor of women’s and gender studies at Columbia University focusing on 19th century African-American women’s writing and the literature of slavery.  After realizing that she had a spiritual life, she discovered metaphysics, left New York and academe, and moved to San Francisco.  There she reconnected with dance, a passion from her twenties, in the freeform barefoot dance community of Berkeley’s Dance Jam and the Northern California Dance Collective’s dance camps.  She also studied shamanic practices (including working with nonphysical guides and teachers), worked as a writer and editor, and discovered Clarity Breathwork.  Maggie now lives in Oakland with her husband, DJ Geej Mauriva, her angel child, Emma Ostara, and her ancient cat, Cornelia.
