Breath as a portal to higher consciousness has been used for thousands of years. In the East many different yogic techniques like Pranayama emphasized the importance of conscious breathing. The Budddha in his Anapanasati Sutra taught mindfullness of the in and out breath as a practice to awaken from the illusion of separation.
Clarity Breathwork evolved out of Rebirthing, which was founded by Leonard Orr in the 1970’s and taught worldwide by both Leonard Orr and Sondra Ray. Many of the basic approaches that we employ grew out of this work. We honor the powerful pioneering that both Leonard Orr and Sondra Ray did to bring Rebirthing to the world and the global breathwork community.
For approximately 20 years, Dana and Peter DeLong taught in the International Rebirthing and Breathwork Community and traveled extensively offering workshops and private sessions. Over the years the work evolved, and new trainers were incorporated. Ashanna Solaris joined with Dana and Peter over ten years ago, and helped develop and rename the work. The work continues to evolve, incorporating new modalities and teaching, and integrating ancient and current teachings of both East and West. Particular influences include the teachings of Adyashanti, Eckart Tolle, Byron Katie, Gangaji, Marshall Rosenberg and many others, with our main teacher being Presence itself. Our focus is on being fully alive and present in our lives from moment to moment, embracing and meeting the impermanent nature of physical reality and the eternal reality of Spirit.
In 1999, we decided to differentiate our work from Rebirthing, and call it Clarity Breathwork. We did this for several reasons. We found the term “Rebirthing” limiting in its implication that the purpose of this work was solely to address re-experiencing and healing birth trauma. Although we find all aspects of birth, which includes womb time, conception and delivery to be very powerful, we also wanted the name of our work to encompass the much wider range of issues that can emerge through practicing conscious, connected breathing. These may stem from childhood, societal conditioning, livelihood and money, sexuality and relationships, past lives, death and dying, and so on. The new name emphasizes the change in consciousness that results from this process.
In addition, we choose to allow and embrace the whole range of spiritual/religious beliefs and non-beliefs that our practitioners and clients choose for themselves with no requirement for any particular spiritual path.
Finally, aother desire in creating Clarity Breathwork was to certify practitioners that we determined had the degree of training and practice to qualify as professional practitioners. When you choose a Certified Clarity Breathworker you know that they have completed a professional training program of substantial length and depth.
In 2007, Dana and Peter DeLong dissolved their business partnership, with Dana DeLong becoming the sole owner of Clarity Productions. After 16 years, Peter took a sabbatical from teaching. A new core team of trainers has emerged that is now the primary faculty of the professional training program, including Dana DeLong, Ashanna Solaris, Maggie Ostara, and Andrzej Skwira. Peter DeLong does not currently teach in the professional training program. He is developing other work focusing on Clarity Breathwork, including Awakening the Sacred Masculine Men's Retreats. He continues to work with private clients, and is excited to see the new directions Clarity Breathwork is taking.
